Product Details

Columnar Blue Spruce, also known as Picea pungens 'Fastigiata', is a narrow, upright evergreen tree with striking blue-green foliage. The needles of Columnar Blue Spruce are stiff and prickly, arranged densely along the branches. They have a distinctive blue-green coloration, which gives the tree its name. This variety of blue spruce grows in a narrow, columnar shape, making it an excellent choice for smaller landscapes or areas where space is limited. Like other varieties of blue spruce, Columnar Blue Spruce produces small, cylindrical cones that start out purple or reddish-brown and mature to a light brown color.

  • Size: Typically, Columnar Blue Spruce can reach heights of 15 to 25 feet (4.5 to 7.5 meters). Its width is much narrower compared to its height, typically ranging from 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters).
  • Location: Plant Columnar Blue Spruce in a location that receives full sunlight for optimal growth and color development. Ensure adequate air circulation to prevent diseases.
  • Soil: Blue spruces prefer well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Amend heavy clay soils with organic matter to improve drainage.
  • Watering: Water newly planted trees deeply and regularly to establish a strong root system. Once established, Columnar Blue Spruce is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree to help conserve soil moisture and suppress weed growth. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.
  • Fertilization: Columnar Blue Spruce generally does not require regular fertilization if planted in nutrient-rich soil. However, you can apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for evergreens in early spring if growth appears slow or foliage color is pale.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning is typically required for Columnar Blue Spruce. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches as needed. You can also lightly prune to shape the tree, but avoid excessive pruning, as it may disrupt the natural form of the tree.
  • Protection: Protect young trees from browsing animals, such as deer, which may feed on the foliage. Consider wrapping the trunk with tree guards during winter to prevent sunscald and rodent damage.
